Quirky but intriguing. Enjoyed the insight into the characters' minds, especially with respect to their selfish points of view as they thought through situations. Very revealing in how we are naturally self centered in our attitudes and motives, if we do not mature and grow. I was a little disappointed with the ending,
but it is probably quite realistic. A tied-in-a-bow happy ending would not have fit the themes and style of the rest of the book.

Oh the behaviors of 1940's New York society folk! Much hilarity and hypocrisy is displayed in this author's satirical novel.

Sex and the City meets Mad Men, kinda. Cleverly written. Strange to think this was published in 1942.

Every Powell I read I find by 50 pages in I’ve inadvertently cast from the Warners stable. Bette Davis was very good in this one.

Sharp satire set in New York City just before entering World War 2, first published in 1942. Sentences worth rereading, characters and situations that are laugh-out-loud funny, and Dickensian sweep. Wow.

New York City in the early twentieth century. It's very jaded and it skewers every character.
