This story was not the most suspenseful, and I have issues with the protagonist, Tempe Brennan. (NOT because she's an entirely different character than the Bones version. She was just a bit too weepy for me & for what I expect from a forensic anthroplogist.) But it wasn't a bad story. What made it less enjoyable was the narrator. I listened to the audiobook, and the reader was so ...dead. She lacked emotion, inflection, or anything else that makes a story interesting to listen to instead of read. (She did great with one character who was supposed to have no inflection or emotion in his voice.) Her wooden performance really affected my perception of this story.

Dr. Brennan has gotten herself stuck in Charleston overseeing a dig that a colleague renigged on. It's only May but it's already hot, sticky, and buggy. And then, on this archeological dig, a body is unearthed that definitely doesn't fall into the category of archeology. Brennan calls her close friend, Emma, who just happens to be the county ME and the two of them set out to put a name on this John Doe. Meanwhile, Pete, Tempe's estranged husband shows up in Charleston on business of his own and they are once again cohabitating, although in separate bedrooms. Tempe and Pete have an easy rapport and within minutes of Pete's arrival, they are swapping stories of their cases and brainstorming for each other. There's clue number 1 about where Reichs is going to take Brennan's found body. Throw Detective Ryan into the mix and Tempe's May just heated up a whole lot more.
I thought this book was interesting in terms of Brennan's personal life. There have been snapshots into it but in this title, it felt like the look at Brennan through a personal lens was more prevalent. I liked it. I like getting to know the professional and the personal character of a story, in this case it's Brennan.

Loved this book!!! Glad it included more of her personal life and included her friend dying because it made me love the character even more.
I like that she is also in conflict over her old love and her current love because feelings don't just disappear over night I'm glad it highlights thy.
The case was excellent and it's nice that it nodded at an actual serial killer and basically did a modern take on that. Better than the last book that was more theory and left me feeling frustrated

Great book! The initial tension between the boys over Tempe gave me some annoyance at first, but the little love triangle managed to make me like it throughout the course of the book.
Another Kathy Reichs hit! Awesome story, good mystery
