I felt like this one was struggling with a bit of an identity crisis. It could never quite figure out if it wanted to be a bit supernatural or a thriller or a bit of a drama. For me, it had a lot of potential it never lived up to and the excess of twists introduce literally at the very end seemed forced and out of step with the story.
Minor: Child abuse, Child death, Sexual assault, and Kidnapping

2.5 stars. It started off eerie, if not outright creepy. Honestly in the beginning I was getting major Midsommar vibes. And then it… went nowhere. What was all this intriguing information you’re given all the potential suspenseful plot lines? Don’t know, most of it will just disappear before the 40% mark. If you opened the book in the middle, you’d be reading pretty average grocery store adult fiction, not a bad way to pass an afternoon, but you’re probably not going to be recommending it to your friends.
The book never recovered. The ending was messy, and in trying to draw mildly logical motivations for what was going on, it just… lost anything it still had going for it. I wound up just shaking my head about most of the revelations which made varying levels of not much sense.

Graphic: Animal cruelty and Animal death
Moderate: Kidnapping
Minor: Sexual assault and Toxic relationship

This suspenseful novel has me never wanting to live in an ecovillage, commune, or near the woods.
When Alex leaves an abusive relationship and finds herself at an off-grid ecovillage with her teenage son and baby daughter, she thinks she's left danger behind.
From day one, Alex feels like she's being watched and preyed upon, first with a bird in a box, then learning about the local legend. When things start happening to her family, Alex decides to investigate. Learning the reason why there's an abandoned farmhouse just metres from where they live, the shadows start to get closer, soon she has no choice but to protect and fight for her son.
The Shadow House kept me guessing until the very end. The ending, however felt like it was handed to me and wrapped with a bow. I would've liked to have one or two things that were left unresolved or not completely told to the reader.
