Love Savannah. Nice to read her story.

2.5 stars.

A pleasant refresher after a run of bad books, reminding me that urban fantasy can be a fun genre. Savannah gets her own book (and when did she turn 21? Dang, I remember back when she was 15...yeah, I actually thought that about a fictional character). And ... it was fine. Another pleasant, interesting, readable entry in the series. With characters I cared about. Yay.

Love seeing/hearing more about Savannah's life. A previous character makes and appearance and the ending makes you wanting more. Onward!

This book feels like half a book. While the story itself is engaging, it lacks several key components to a good story line. There is no falling action or resolution. The book just ends, abruptly. I know that there are some authors that release books that are half the story. I just would never have put Kelly Armstrong in this group. I’ve decided to hold out hope for the next book and hope everything will be resolved then.

Actually 4.5 stars.

I really liked Savannah as a character but she's my fourth favourite. Her case was interesting even if the book doesn't let you guess who the killer is. I liked the brief mention of the Benandanti even if they are extinct. I look forward to seeing what happens with Kayla (hopefully) and the witch hunter!

I haven't read many others in this series but it was easy enough to figure out the world building in this. I enjoyed most of it except for the completely lame and utterly unnecessary ending complete with cliffhanger. Ugh.

Savannah finally has her own case as a witch investigator after being contacted by half demon Jesse to investigate the death of three young women, two drug addicted good for nothings and one in a local cult, that had ritualistic overtones. Savannah’s wards are on vacation in Hawaii so she jumps at a chance to solo. Her crush, Adam, is similarly absent. Savannah gets on her motorcycle and heads off.

She immediately finds one of the drug addicts young daughter at the crime scene investigating her mother’s death (I wish there had been more of this bright young girl) and that leads to her grandmother who was helpful in the development of leads. The two promising ones were Cody, would be land baron thug and his wife (a dark witch) Tiffany and the cult leader and his girls.

The mystery was good. However, Savannah’s magic – on which she’s over reliant – started shorting out and honestly I wanted more thought on that, especially when Adam does show up to help her and Jesse. I wanted her to at least tell him. At least when she starts getting ill that she does tell Adam because I hate when a character doesn’t tell people things MOST people would because it’s obviously important.

The twist at the end did, however, feel rather contrived and didn’t mean much to me since I’m not familiar with the series (more my fault than the authors on that part but the lameness of that twist stands on its own). I did enjoy it until the end. The last two chapters soured the book for me but until then I had fun with it.

Not going to lie we need to take about the narration first. This series goes through a lot of them and thought the first will always be my favorite. Johanna Parker is my runner up all though she will always be Sookie to me she really does a phenomenal job bring Savannah her own voice.

Now on to the plot, I LOVED that Savannah is all grown up and ready to prove she is ready to investigate alone. The connection between her and Adam YES PLEASE! I wanted this book for so long.

The ups and downs and the mystery really helped me come out of my funk for having the last book end. Elena and Clay are my faves, and I know Savannah would spend time with them I think it would be neat if we got a mix of them all, and get a chance to see Savannah interact with them.

Adam doesn’t let Savannah push him away this makes me love him even that much more! <3
