Agatha Raisin is back to her old tricks, and back in Carsley. Much more fun than The Terrible Traveller, probably because we're back at home and the usual cast of minor characters are around again.

Not as funny as the first 5 books in the series but a definite improvement on the sixth book. This was my favorite scene in this book.

"Can't you steer a straight course?" asked Agatha. "You nearly banged into that rowing-boat."
"We're doing fine," said Roy. "You just dig the pole in, Aggie, and thrust--"
To Agatha's horror, he pole-vaulted and landed face-down on the grassy bank while Agatha and the punt went shooting off in the other direction.
The punt hit the opposite bank with force as she instinctively rose to her feet, and Agatha was catapulted into the river.

Roy and Mrs Bloxby are prominently featured and Roy while still a conniving sycophant is really starting to grow on me. James remains as stubborn and clueless as ever.

Ah Agatha- the MC I love to dislike the most. :) I'm not sure why I am sticking with this series! Somehow and in someway- Agatha has wormed her way into my heart. The writing is pretty good and I like the descriptions of the the English countryside. If she can just get over James and move on- maybe I'll be happier with this series!

Agatha is judgy. Agatha is hard on herself. Agatha is desperate. Agatha is surrounded by similarly horrible people. MC Beaton is not politically correct (and really should think carefully about some of her lines!).

Agatha sometimes shows or is shown some decent humanity, and that makes the books both bearable and cosy crime capers that are fairly enjoyable.

This review could apply to every single title in this series. The end.

I generally prefer Hamish MacBeth because he is mostly cantankerous whereas Agatha is mostly mean, but they are much of a muchness really.

Thus ends the vaguest and least helpful review you've ever read.

Something I like about these books, is you know what you're going to get....
Somehow Agatha is talked into doing the PR for a company who is purchasing the rights to some local water... of course there are villagers supporting this and not supporting this, so it will come down to a vote... and then guess what? People start getting killed! Seriously if I ever run into this Agatha i'm running fast.... now James and Agatha continue with the miscommunication, even though they are trying to solve the same case, and Bill is encouraging it to bring them back together.... The case gets solved, the miscommunication not at all.... there were definitely some laugh out loud moments in this book especially concerning Roy....

Oof, this story did not age well. Overall, I do still enjoy this easy-reading series with its atmospheric world-building, small-town shenanigans, and cozy audiobook narration by Penelope Keith.
