I think I must have read this when I was young, but didn't remember the story. I get [b:Anne of Green Gables|8127|Anne of Green Gables (Anne of Green Gables, #1)|L.M. This was such a wonderful story and makes me want to find the good in every situation like Pollyanna's father taught her to do.

It's sad, isn't it, how something can become a pejorative when surely optimism is a worthwhile trait. The online dictionary says that a pollyanna is an excessively cheerful or optimistic person, and I agree that people who are always cheerful and always optimistic can get on your nerves, but I'd still prefer an optimist over a pessimist any day.

So, Pollyanna (whose name was a combination of her aunts Polly and Anna) is the most infuriating and delightful child that I've had the pleasure to meet in a book. Her incessant chatter is hilarious; her over-riding optimism is lovely. I laughed so much at her wearing down of all the grumpy adults around, and at her wonderful sense of being alive. My grand-daughters are not dissimilar to Pollyanna - they drive me nuts, but they also make me glad they're around.

I am so pleased that I have finally read this book!

I mainly read this because a song I like has the phrase "Pollyannish paradise". I was pleasantly surprised. It made me smile, laugh, and, at moments, feel sad. It reminded me that some of the most enduring fiction is centered around human relationships, which may change over the years, but stay relatable to most people.

I was also surprised at how biting the societal critique was in this book. Through innocent, childish observations of how adults act, Pollyanna was often confused by the mismatch between the stated values and actions of the adults around her. The church ladies who wouldn't help her orphan friend because they wanted their donation to top the list of donors to a group in India. Nothing like direct, innocent questioning to reveal the absurdities of the justifications people make for themselves.

Ajattelin että otan vinkkauspakkiin vanhempaa lastenkirjallisuutta - jalomielinen tyttösankaritar ei oikein kolahtanut, saa odottaa vinkkausta aikaan myöhempään

I am too old to be encountering this book for the first time...but, probably a bit too childish as I couldn't help but giggle whenever the narrator said "erect," "ejaculated," and "duty."
