i'm gonna be honest. It was a short story collection and it was my first murakami book but I can already see the repetitiveness in his storytelling and his lazy creative choices. I even disregarded the lack of connection he has with the female gender (the female characters were so cartoon like in his descriptions) and just focused on the story and writing. That's saying a lot about this author from someone who A) hasn't read fiction books in a long time and B) hasn't read any other books by him. I started losing interest around the 4th story and then just forced myself to finish it.

This book was given to me by one of my friends. It is not quite what I expected from it, however it has been an interesting read. It has various short stories about, what would you expect?, men without women. Stories can be read alone. Altogether an engaging read.

3.5
drive my car - 4/5
yesterday - 3/5
das eigenständige organ - 5/5
scheherazade - 1/5 (what the fuck war das?)
kinos bar - 5/5
samsa in love - 2/5

A collection of seven short stories. All the tales are told from the perspective of men, though women (and memories of women) feature throughout. Some great stuff here. The story that the movie Drive My Car was inspired by is in this book. Liked it a lot.

Enjoyable Murakami — some were more to my taste than others. Kino and Drive My Car and Scheherazade were probably my favourites, and thankfully I didn’t dislike any. Short stories are often a gamble! I do wish there has been more magical realism, and overall some of these short stories could have delved deeper into reflection of the realism they embraced.

Not the titular short story making me weep.
