I had really high hopes for this book, but unfortunately it was not for me. I was hoping it would be a fun mystery but it turned out to be a cringy “love” story. I put love in quotes cuz…no, just no. There were too many “sex” scenes that had me outwardly cringing. I have not read any other of Lisa Gardner’s books so I can’t say if this was a one off. But it definitely was not my cup of tea.

This is the first book I have read by this author. It was a recommendation and I'm glad I read it. While it was slow in some parts, I enjoyed the book and will definetly read more books from this author.

I got sucked into this author’s books with the first book that featured Flora Dane, then went through the ones that came before that and featured the same cop. Then there were 2 more Flora Dane/DD Warren books after. Then this week, I was reminded that the next Flora Dane book is ALSO going to include the characters from this OTHER series the author writes.... so, yes, I may as well read as many of those as I can too. It’ll be a massive crossover event - I need to know as much as possible about all universes.

This first one was good. A bit like Flora, it’s a formerly-victimized-woman-strikes-back kind of story. Except this woman’s husband is a serial killer. Plus this has more of a romance angle, with the chick seeking the help of a former marine/mercenary to train her to kick ass. This man is emotionally damaged and angry, so you know it was my cup of tea. There’s a lot going on — some of it is weirdly rushed, then you have the guy’s relationship with the chick, the guy’s relationship with his sister, the chick’s relationship with the serial killer, everyone’s involvement with the cops and FBI.... But it’s cool for a popcorn thriller. So yeah, it’s pretty cliched but I enjoyed the hell out of it.

It's not often I can't finish a book. Usually I just plow through. Yeah....I couldn't do it. 200 something pages in and I just gave up. How much abuse and angry sex and rehashing the same old baggage can you have?! Good grief....This book was a huge disappointment.
