It started so well... I loved the first half of the book. I was curious to see who did it in the end but then the twists began and, to be honest, that's where it lost me. It wasn't very believable at all, some bits of the storyline where never explored fully, others were changed along the way. The point of a good twist is that you don't see it coming because the reader is SUBTLY let down a certain path. There wasn't anything subtle about this one though. The reader is purposefully mislead and there is no way you can think back to what you've read and think "oh, I misinterpreted that!", which is what usually happens to me... Most of the characters were not at all likeable, the police did a lousy job, people were paid off and didn't come forward later, and someone is a criminal mastermind and a psychopath but nobody ever suspects anything...

From early in the book, I did not like Jane. She was too concerned with making sure everyone else was looking at what she wanted them to see and too obsessed with being rich. I don't know how I even finished this one. The end was too simple for me.

I was unfamiliar with Phoebe Morgan but read this as a serialisation via Pigeonhole. It is a fast-paced thriller, focussing on the disappearance of a schoolgirl and the aftermath of this.

It gave me a similar vibe to Broadchurch, small town secrets and lies, where everyone is hiding something and trying to keep up appearances.

It was well-written, and I could easily see this as a TV adaptation. I'll check out Morgan's previous book now too.

I honestly just could not get into this book, it was not written in a style in which I enjoy, I was able to call the plot quite early on… and overall was just waiting for it to end. I only finished it because I was holding out a little bit of hope that it was going to have a twist that would grip me and plunge me into the book but it never happened it just stayed very stale!
