From Book Cover:
Caitlyn Sullivan was already a Hollywood star at nine, but still liked to play hide-and-seek at the family home in Big Sur. It was during one of those games that she disappeared. Cate managed to escape her abductors, and Dillon Cooper found the bloodied, exhausted girl huddled in his ranch house. When the teenager and his family heard her story, they provided refuge, reuniting her with her loved ones. Cate's ordeal, though, was far from over. She would spend years sheltered in Ireland, restlessness growing in her soul, before returning to Los Angeles to restart her life. But two seeds had been planted that long-ago night -- one of great love, and one of a terrible vengeance.
My Review:
The kidnapping and Cate's bravery were well written. The trauma that would follow any victim of violent crime is acknowledged and not gleaned over. However, the years Cate and her father spent in Ireland only merited a sentence or two, though most of her healing would have occurred here and shaped the character she would be for the remainder of the book. I would also liked being privy to the correspondence Cate shared with Dillon's mother. These letters helped forge a bond we see when Cate returns to California. Yet, this too was only given a single sentence. Introducing new characters that end up having a pivotal role over the half-way mark in the book, seemed there to plug a plot hole.
In spite of these issues, the book was worth the read.

Cate Sullivan is a daughter in a family of Hollywood legends, but that was not able to protect her from a traumatizing childhood event. Hideaway follows Cate through the aftermath as she grows up and finally returns to the scene of the crime. As I read more Nora Roberts books, they are quickly becoming comfort reads for me. While I had a great time following Cate's life, and loved the Hollywood legacy feeling to the book, I did find the plot kind of dragged at times and the ending was a bit underwhelming. That being seid, it was exactly the book I needed to read at the moment and I can't wan't to pick up another one of hers.

I have read many of Nora Roberts' works through the years. These characters lived up to the ones I have read in the past. Likeable. People you pull for to find happiness.

I found Hideaway to be a good book, but it was trying to be too many things for me to really enjoy it. The book was divided into four parts and told primarily from Cate’s point of view, but it occasionally jumped around to several other characters’ POV as well. Part 1 introduces the reader to the Sullivan family and the ensuing kidnapping of the child Cate. Part 2 follows Cate as she deals with her situation and growing up, a bit of a bildungsroman. Part 3 follows Cate back to Big Sur as she finally settles into life as an adult. Part 4 develops her life there as the “mystery” ramps up to its conclusion.
As a family drama, it was very successful. I really enjoyed Part I exploring the family dynamics and the action-y kidnapping drama. Great characterizations. The next part of the book seemed to slow down a little too much for me and I lost a bit of interest while Cate “grew up” and explored acting. As a mystery or suspense novel, it was ruined for me by the small blurbs from the point of view of certain characters, or “bad guys” if you will, that gave away the story. The romance seemed like a foregone conclusion that lacked development between the friends to lovers jump. As a reader, I felt like I knew what was happening without it actually being spelled out on the page.
Read this book for the family dynamics and not for the suspense or romance angles.

I love escapism and Nora Roberts has always been one of my faves, but this was beyond the typical formulaic romance thriller that we expect and tolerate. Cheesy dialogue, unremarkable characters, and the tension just never built.

I've realized that I really love Nora Roberts books! She is so good at creating a world and characters that I just want to live with. I normally don't like a story that takes place over so much time, but I didn't mind with this one because the characters are so fun. I did feel the very end wasn't the best, but overall it was still really good.
