I am not a fan of thrillers, or first person narrative in the books I read, but I devoured this book in one sitting. It was so good.

This book was gifted to me and I decided I’d give it a shot. The book follows longtime couple Anna and Hendrik and their friend Melina and her new boyfriend Jacob on a couples backpacking trip through Sarek national park in Sweden. The trip starts off rocky and rapidly get worse as every relationship is pushed to the limits. This book juxtaposes the story with police interviews with Anna, and it had me eager to find out what happened next.

The heavy atmosphere of being in the middle of the mountains makes the reader feel that much more present within the story, and the reality of fighting for your life both from the fear of being murdered and the terrain around you made this book a really scary read. It also plays heavily with the impact that near death experiences and fear have on the human psyche.

The usage of an unreliable narrator was really well done, and the plot twists at the end of the book leave the reader wondering who really killed who, and what the hell really happened in those mountains.

Would have been an easy first 5 star read of 2024 for me if not for the ending. Way way too abrupt and open ended. I hate books, tv shows, movies anything that wants me to choose what I believe about the ending and then doesn’t actually tell me what happened.
