Premessa: ho letto moltissimo di Sylvia Plath e ho letto moltissimo su Sylvia Plath.
Questo non fa di me un'esperta, ovviamente, ma solo una persona molto curiosa e discretamente appassionata al personaggio.
Ero dunque molto curiosa di leggere questo libro, ma a distanza di qualche settimana dalla fine della lettura ho alcune perplessità, credo possano riassumersi in una sola espressione: questo romanzo è un enorme azzardo. In questo romanzo a parlare è Sylvia, solo Sylvia con la sua voce e il suo claustrofobico flusso di coscienza. E fino a un certo punto questa voce funziona: è una voce imperiosa, istrionica, che trascina il lettore nei suoi picchi euforici e nelle pieghe più buie, ma senza riuscire davvero ad arrivare in fondo.
Perché, insomma, ci vuole una certa dose di incoscienza nel voler parlare al posto di Sylvia Plath pretendendo che il paragone fra le voci non risulti in ultima analisi impietoso. Insomma, qui a parlare vorrebbe essere Sylvia, ma la voce non è quella di Sylvia.
Il finale poi è un po' monco, c'è una sincope che impedisce ogni raggiugimento di un culmine.

Insomma, è sicuramente un esperimento molto interessante, ma non è del tutto riuscito, a mio parere.

Läste denna samtidigt som jag lyssnade på albumet Preacher’s Daughter av Ethel Cain vilket är en upplevelse jag starkt rekommenderar.

Tyckte mycket om själva läsningen, men den var något svår att ta sig igenom av flera olika anledningar, vissa bra. Dessutom har jag inte rett ut mina tankar kring etiken att skriva så här om någon som fanns på riktigt, speciellt med tanke på Friedas dikt ’My Mother:’

They are killing her again.
She said she did it
One year in every ten,
But they do it annually, or weekly,
Some even do it daily,
Carrying her death around in their heads
And practising it. She saves them
The trouble of their own;
They can die through her
Without ever making
The decision. My buried mother
Is up-dug for repeat performances.
