Nathalie is a scientist who returns home to Mossmarken (Sweeden) to study the peat bogs. Nathalie was born in Mossmarken but left to escape a tragic past. She is relieved when no one recognizes her and she is able to work on her research. She befriends Johannes who helps her collect data. However the bog begins to give up bodies and it becomes clear a murder has been active for years. The Forbidden Place is an eerie mystery that leaves me looking forward to more novels from Jansson.

Olyckliga förväntningar påverkar tyvärr det generella intrycket av denna bok. Intressant miljö, ett lite trevande tempo som jag i normala fall skulle uppskatta, men det träffar inte rätt. Jag hade nog lite omdedvetet och naivt hoppats på mindre svensk spänningsroman och mer Jeff VanderMeer.

Mlaștina este un roman de debut, dar nu aș fi ghicit asta. Susanne Jansson a știut să combine elementele de thriller cu misticismul și legendele. Mă gândeam că nu voi găsi vreun rost în această combinație, dar am rămas surprins plăcută de toată povestea ascunsă în spatele detaliilor. Recunosc, mi-a dat ceva de furcă așezarea poveștii în pagină, aș fi preferat să existe o delimitare mai exactă. Sunt sigură că ar fi fost mult mai ușor de urmărit firul narativ dacă ar fi fost mai bine evidențiate planurile.

Pas mal de personnages mais aucun n’est creusé à fond. On ne s’attache à personne. Tout le récit me semblait décousu. Le plot est vraiment superficiel, tout comme la résolution.

The story was compelling and quick If not predictable. I found the characters to be really interesting with good back stories. The setting was good — mysterious and creepy. A perfect place for murder with history that lent itself to some good who done it intrigue as we slogged through the bog uncovering each and every body along the way.
There were some really nice sentences in here that I went back to and read multiple times like…wow…that was unexpected. So impressive writing on this one.
Overall a pleasant read for a cold overcast day.
