Slightly over-wrought, but incredibly atmospheric, this first novel conjures up the mystery and eeriness of of a Scandinavian bog in the darkening of autumn beautifully. A perfect place to set a spooky crime.
Perhaps due to the translation, it is sometimes a little wordy and repetitive, but I'll be interested to see what Jansson's next novel is like.

This was a decent book for a debut novel. The pace of the book picked up after the first three parts, which I felt were pretty slow. I found myself thinking “okay, let’s get on with it”. And mind you, the first three parts span over half of the book. I appreciated the setting of the book, but it had way too many characters that I personally think added no value to the actual storyline (except maybe to throw you off, but it was pretty easy to figure out).
I randomly picked up this novel in the clearance section of Chapters and I was pleasantly surprised! Definitely some twists and turns you never see coming!
