First time I’ve read an Elizabeth Gaskell. Really enjoyed her writing style, it was social, playful and funny. The story is simple and sweet, focussing on the day to day lives of a collection of women in the made up village of Cranford. A witty and enjoyable classic.

Each chapter is basically a short story, all set in the fictitious village of Cranford in which nothing of interest ever happened.

Confession: I read (listened, actually) to this because I saw that there is a miniseries based on this that I just know will be up my alley. I had never heard of Cranford before I saw that, but I'm glad I did. This is a sweet novel with great characters I can't wait to see come to life on the screen.

Who knew that following the events of a female led, small and sleepy English community would be such a delight? Not that I’m hugely surprised - this is Elizabeth Gaskell after all and she can write these sorts of things so well. I do prefer her longer works with stronger plots, but Cranford is quick, atmospheric and funny at times, well worth a read.

Cranford didn't get me at all, it was a drag to get through it and it was more a serie of uninteresting events then a exciting novel. Not my cup of tea.
