Short review:
I heard about this series for a long time, but I could never find the books in English here. Stupid libraries. :(
So I found them elsewhere, and I am really happy that I got a chance to read them.
This book is the first one, and where everything starts. We meet Mildred who is very bad at being a witch, though most of the time she doesn't even mean to do wrong, she tries her best, but well disaster tends to follow her where she goes. I really liked Mildred, though at times I wondered how she has gotten into the school in the first place, does everyone get accepted just like that? Or is there some kind of magical exam?
Luckily she has a wonderful best friend, Maud, I really like her. How regardless of everything she stuck with Mildred and tried to cheer her up when needed.
I loved the detailed descriptions of the castle and school. I always like boarding schools, but this one is even more special since it is filled with magic. Potion classes, chanting classes and more.
The girls even get a cat, mostly black, but in case of Mildred a tabby. :)
The illustrations were definitely a plus, I really liked seeing Mildred and Maud, though my mind has a different view of Mildred.
All in all, I loved this one, and I will be sure to read the rest of the series!

Miss Cackle was really nice, Miss Hardbroom was quite mean. Mildred was clumsy and Maud was not clumsy. I really liked this book because I kind of like mean characters and clumsy ones.
The story was great because Mildred saved the school from a nasty crew of witches. They wanted to turn everyone in the school into frogs!

A childhood favourite of mine. It is a tale of a clumsy girl who comes from a non-witching family and ends up at a witching boarding school. Miss Cackle - The Headmistress of Cackles Academy - is gentle and rarely gets angry. Miss Hardbroom - The Deputy Headmistress of Cackles Academy - is know for her strict ways and for being a disciplinarian. However, all she wants to do is protect her students and get the very best from them. Mildred Hubble - a clumsy girl who always has her shoelaces undone and always manages to find drama/trouble. As a child I related to her as I was (still am) very clumsy and was always (is always) told to do up my shoe laces. Maud Spellbody/Moonshine - Mildred's first trusted best friend - is the good two-shoes of the friends. She is always trying to get Mildred out of trouble. Maud is a kind and caring person but will snap at you if you upset any of her friends. Enid Nightshade - One of Mildred's best friends - the trouble maker of the group. She is very friendly and kind-hearted but enjoys the thrill of bending the rules. Ethel Hallow - Mildred's sworn enemy - the spoilt and arrogant child who always has to have things go her way. To adults she seems sweet and innocent but to her peers she is mean and cruel.
As I mentioned as a child this was one of my favourite book series and I love that children are still enjoying these books (and the TV series too!). I recently read this book to a group of children who absolutely loved listening to Mildred's adventures. Again, this is another book/book series I will use when teaching.
