Rating this really for the stories, the testimonies of the young people -- honest and vulnerable, reminding all of us of the importance of how unhelpful it is to force kids to behave or dress a certain way because of their gender. It's the anxiety of the cishet adults in their lives that causes so much stress and trauma for young people, not the wondering they have over their gender.

That said, the book itself needed a little something -- something to arrange or draw together the stories, some sort of helpful synthesis, to be truly successful

Interesting. Discussed many variations of transgender but some of the narrative is very immature and short-sighted.

I read this because it has a Stonewall Book Award.... it's very 2015.

A nice introduction for family members of transgendered individuals to help show the diverse amount of gender that exists.

This book contains the following triggers:
*Misogyny
*Trans Violence
*Gender Dysphoria
*Racism
*Religious Trauma
*Child Abuse
*P*dophilia
*S*xual Assault of a Minor
*Self Harm
*Attempted Su!c!de

I do not believe this book has aged well (as of 2022).
These are stories about trans youths but I would not recommend trans youths read them, which is very telling for the direction the (cis) author took.
If you still wish to read it, though--to keep the book banner's mad if nothing else--I would recommend just reading Cameron's story. It's the least problematic of the bunch and Cameron themself is very wholesome.
If you are actually trying to educate yourself on trans lives; however, I would recommend finding a book that is written by a trans author, instead.

Reads like a fiction narrative. Excellent resource for anyone with questions about the transgender community or experience.
