Torn between 3 and 4 stars on this one. The writing was a little choppy and non-descriptive so for that I would give it three, but it's a great book for teens and my kids really liked it, so in the end I'll give it four.

Okay, but not great. Doesn't quite pull together and it feels like the author is trying too hard. Might recommend to middle school boys looking for a modern fantasy series who have read everything else.

The world building was not that great. They just kind of threw us into everything, nothing was really explained, and when it was explained, it was confusing. The roles of different caste systems were not as explored as I would prefer. I like the general idea, though, and I liked his friends. I did think it was a little too much that practically everybody around him turned out to be a warrior or a wizard or whatever they’re called. That seems a little too convenient.

Gonna be honest, when I first picked up this book I was expecting castles and dragons and a Medieval setting. Whilst here were dragons...or one at least...it actually took place in modern times. However, I was not disappointed. It was still a good book, just not what I had initially expected. Pretty much all the characters were likable. Jack, Fitch, Will, Linda--hell, I even liked Longbranch. Jack wasn't a wimp and he wasn't constantly complaining. And instead of just whining about not liking his role, he (with Hasting's help) actually did something to change it.
