I think this is an important story and I'm glad I took the time for it, but I didn't find it a compelling (or even engaging) comic. It rushes over points, never clearly establishes its characters, and doesn't give me (an admittedly largely ignorant-of-Cambodian-history American) much background to build my understanding on. Perhaps I should've read an article or two on Cambodian history so I could focus on the micro-details without being distracted by the macro. Still, seems like a truly awful time and place in our human history. I'm truly sorry for everyone who had to live through it.

This graphic novel was amazing!
It’s full colour and full of heart. It’s just amazing the story and heartache that comes from war, and what seems worse, re-education.
To watch Chan is the real timeline, it’s heart breaking.
Although I knew some of the story having made it a point when in Cambodia to study and visit museums that highlighted the war period. The impact of the re-education camps never was highlighted.
The deaths certainly were but not the hardship of living.
This is a wonderful immersion into the history of a country that is often forgotten.

A very personal depiction of one family’s struggle under the Khmer Rogue in Cambodia in the 1970’s. I was taught almost nothing about Cambodia in school and I’m glad I came across this graphic novel at the library. It does a great job at tying the personal to the political context.
