Like many people here I had a hard time connecting to the story and main characters at first. The random 1-2 page chapters did nothing for me but drag me out of the story and made me put away the book.

I decided to give the book another try a few weeks later. I read about 1/3 and after which I decided to fully skip those “chapters” and it made it more enjoyable to read and made me appreciate how beautiful the story was.

While this charming story has a profound message to impart, I found myself wanting to hurry it along. This tale of profound loss and grief takes place in Japan, it was originally written in Italian by a writer who lives in Japan, and I have a strong instinct that something was lost in its English translation. That said, not a bad read and it had some very touching moments.

Not sure what I make of it yet.
Quite a gentle book.
Parts of it made me cry.
Live the idea of the wind phone - I think it exists?

I love love.

This book was beautiful and the writing style was exactly my type. The lists were adorable. From parenthood and love to loss and hope, I genuinely have no other words other than beautiful.

“Childhood taught us something different about happiness, that all you needed to do was reach out your hand in the right direction and it was there to be taken.”

“We need to posses joy in abundance before we can bestow it upon somebody else”

“Him returning to her. Her returning to him.”

“Actually, she thought all children - without exception - were miracle workers”

“She had felt so happy to have it confirmed - she was loved, and loved in return - that she believed this love would protect her.”

“Being loved comes with enormous responsibilities.”
