The audiobook is beautifully read by David Tennant, it is a fun, easy listen, with a warm hug of a story at its heart.
The book is very different from the movie, so for those looking for the same story in written format, be prepared for a very different Berk. Would I recommend this for children now? Not really, there is a distinct lack of female characters, the only women mentioned are Hiccup's mother (she has one line at the end of the book) and one of the dragons (who is a snob). This book reinforces gender divides and while I appreciate it was written for young boys, we should not be limiting boys to just reading about boy heroes. If you are going to let your kids read, then you'll probably also want to sit down and explain that Viking women were an important part of their society and what reasons the author may have had for excluding them from this book.

I read this after I watched the movie and I have to say that I liked the movie adaptation better than the book. The book is cute and fun to read but it just lacks some of the fun that the movie has. It could be that I am just too old to enjoy all the fun in the book. :-/

So I of course loved the movie this book was based on and decided to give the book a go since I love dragons... To my surprise this book has very little in common with the movie but both are pretty fantastic in their own sphere. I love love the characters, the descriptions of all the people and the dragons. This was a super delightful and very quick read. Fully recommended for those that like juvenile fiction.

Firstly, if you've seen the movie adaptation of this book it is an entirely different story. Other than keeping character names it seems they changed virtually every aspect of the story.
I listened to this book with my son on audiobook, narrated by David Tennant and it was very fun. Tennant did a wonderful job and for me probably added another star to my rating. My 11 year old gives it 5 stars. :) A great fun middle grade read.

That was a fun ride, and the performance by David Tennant in the audiobook was excellent. I probably won't continue the series unless he does recordings of the rest.
