la bushnell scrive non altrettanto bene di quanto facciano gli autori delle serie tratrte dai suoi libri, lo avevo notato già per s+tc.
ma intrattiene, divertendo.
in lingua originale poi diverte di più.

I came away on holiday with three books to read: The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas by John Boyne, On Chesil Beach by Ian McEwan and Burning Bright by Helen Dunmore. Of course, this did not stop my from buying a book at the airport (I am a serious bookshop junkie) and since I was going on holiday, I thought I would get something fairly trashy and easy. I opted for Candace Bushnell´s Lipstick Jungle seeing as I am enjoying the TV show. I have just finished it and I have to say I am pretty disappointed. Whilst I am all for reading about powerful women, succeeding and battling it out in a supposed man´s world, I was bitterly disappointed with the characterisation of these women who came across as entitled, whinging and unlikeable. The bleat of ´men get away with it, why can´t we´always sits uneasy with me - just because men do ´get away with it´(although there is an argument to say that these men are just as unlikable), does not mean that women should try too. And I don´t mean try to succeed, I mean try to screw people over or try to have affairs or try to blame others for their shortcomings etc. etc.
The main point of contention for me, though, was Bushnell´s rather heavy-handed prose. The art of leaving things to the reader´s imagination appears lost on her. She will explain every metaphor and ram every viewpoint down your throat so many times that it becomes tiresome. Whilst I really enjoyed the TV shows Sex and the City and Lipstick Jungle, which were both inspired by her writing, I think the credit for their respective (and, admittedly, varying) success belongs to people other than Bushnell herself.

I am finally done with this book and I have to say I am disappointed! I loved the TV show. I know books and the movies/ tv shows are never really the same but this one just was very different altogether. It was like reading two different stories of two different sets of women with the same names. The book felt a lot more feminist and that is not in a good way at all. It just left a very bad feeling! Gotta find a good book to start reading immediately to get the taste of this one out.

Some have said this book is unrealistic. Others have commented that it shows a critical view of what happens when women act like men in the business world. I feel both views are right. It was pretty improbable sometimes and I could tell it was dated but I was still intrigued by the " women as rich, high powered business executives" angle of the story. Should women try and act like men? Is business equal for the sexes and should it be? I didn't find the answers in this book but appreciate the fact it got me thinking about them.

A decent chick-lit read --- nothing terribly special but easy and fast to read. Heavy on the working mom/powerful women themes.

I rarely say this, but I liked the TV show better!

This book is really terrible. By 3/4 of the way through, I still couldn't tell the main characters apart. That's a really bad sign. I was hoping this would be a follow-up to Trading Up, because that book ended at a pivotal point in the main character's life, but it was not. Which would have been fine if this book were any good, but it's not. Also, I'm still bitter that this TV show got renewed for the fall season and Cashmere Mafia got cancelled! (Not that that has anything to do with the book, but it's nice to vent.)

That was really good. It's not the type of book I typically read, but it was a nice change of pace. Great characters and a very entertaining story. I may have to read more of her books. This was much better than the guilty pleasure I was expecting.
