An interesting and well written story, but it feels unfinished.

This was a relatively confounding novel.
On the surface it's a murder mystery. On the night of the World Cup final match a young Korean woman is murdered - causing shockwaves throughout the community. There are two main suspects, a grieving mother and sister, and the deceased girl's classmates, all of whom have different stories, perspectives, and opinions. The victim herself lives only in the memories of those who remain, and she never really comes into focus - she is just mere sketches of a life as seen by those around her.
Structurally is where this book lost me. Each chapter has a shifting narrator whose perspective is less than dependable. I know unreliable narrators are popular, but this book gives us several. It also plays with form by giving us some chapters in the style of a police interrogation, or a therapy session, while others are more straightforward. No clear story, and definitely no resolution, ever materialize. Instead we are left, as readers, to collect the pieces and see for ourselves how they fit together, if they do at all. I found these choices to be frustrating, because it seems like the author expects the reader to do all the heavy lifting and make something out of the Rorschach inkblot she has messily created. Some people no doubt will identify something here. I just thought it was a bit messy and ultimately just a whole lot of nothing.

read this on a friend’s rec and !! strangely really liked this book. it was super short, but somehow really captivating and intriguing. i can’t exactly pinpoint what made it stand out so much tbh. i think the dialogue and emotions were very well written. something like that.

anyway, 4 stars simply because there was no resolution. which i think was on purpose, and i can appreciate that. i just wish there had been some confirmation.

Intriguing novella…I enjoyed it!

profound look at grief, trauma, privilege and jealousy. not so much about who the perpetrator is but instead dives into the why and the after. not for everyone but i loved it

This is a rather average book, in my opinion. I found the format and switch between POVs a bit confusing at first and the story seemed repetitive at some points. I do think the book is about the perfect length though, despite the slight repetition, it didn't seem unnecessarily drawn out.

The plot itself is only kind of interesting and I think there are better ways to go about this kind of a plot to maintain suspense and give the story a little more depth.
