It is very clear that this is the first book in a series of twelve; it is very much a book that just sets up a storyline. The prologue introduces the zombies in Ireland then much of the rest of the book is focussed on setting up B’s life story and the struggles she is living with. Then near the end of the book the zombies invade B’s school and within the last few pages B is scratched and has her heart pulled out by a zombie, turning her into one.
It took me far too long to realise that the main character of this book was a girl and not a guy. I got really confused on page 196 when Todd was saying ‘Becky’ and calling her ‘my girl’.
This book took on Shan’s usual style of unashamedly describing gore in detail. It comes with full descriptions of the zombies mauling the people and devouring their brains.
Overall this book was good although very much a set up for the rest of the series.

I was so confused when reaching the end of the book, the twist was definitely shocking, all in all a pretty amazing book. The amount of gore in this book, its enough to make you throw up, i loved it. Well done Shan, a really fabulous series, can't wait for the next one.

I really wish they allowed half-stars., because I'd go up to 3.5. Have you ever read a book and really enjoyed it until the last 20 percent or so? That's the case here. It was gong really well until an unnecessary twist and an over-the-top poor ending. I may give book 2 a try, but if it's more of the same, no way I'm going through all 12.

And we have the worst book of the year. Wow, that was awful. I HATED the main character. He was a complete asswipe. Just because you are raised by asswipes, doesn't mean you have to be one too. He was until his moment of clarity, but WAY before that and even WAY before the zombies showed up there, I had no interest in this book or reading any more. Would have stopped as soon as I started it, if I didn't want the points for a challenge.

Am I the only one who thought B was a guy throughout the entire book? This book was amazing though

What the crap.. I'm so lost, made it about 60-70% through the book, there was like one chapter on zombies and that was it. All I got from this is racism.. and abuse.

Dang. I did NOT want to get hooked into another YA series right now. I knew this was the first in a series, but I thought that it would be just another gore-fest that I could listen to quickly then move right on to a stand alone novel. I should have known better.
Having not read any of Darren Shan's books before, I don't know if insanely high cliff hangers are his M.O., but he certainly left me teetering on the edge at the end of Zom-B.
I liked that there were other issues at play in the novel as well, specifically some serious issues involving racism, making this more than just another zombie-eat-world novel. Also, B's character is really well fleshed out (sorry).
I can't say much more without giving away a totally shocking plot twist in the novel. Well, shocking for me at least.
Fun and fast-paced- I'm hooked!

Not too bad. I really liked the ending. Wasn't expecting it.
Lots of other readers complained about there not being a lot of zombies. Um...how many zombies did the book need? There were plenty of decaying, flesh and brain eaters for me. Will probably read the next one in the series, but don't know how many others.
