I didn't like it as much as I thought I would. It almost felt like to me that I was reading some pioneer "horror" story. I'm glad the ending was what it was at least.

This was more like 1.5 stars. I spent two years tracking down a copy of this book and it was not worth it at all. There are much better pioneer stories out there, including ones with REAL PLOTS. This one has no real plot. It's like 100 pages of "she's alone THEY ARE PIONEERS TOGETHER LET THAT HURRICANE ROAR."
Seriously. So lame. Of course, I didn't like Little House on the Prairie either, so I'm not really surprised I didn't particularly respond to this one.

Recommended, but not required, for an online Laura Ingalls Wilder class I am currently taking.
Interesting contrast with Wilder's writing, as Rose took a lot of her mom's memories and put it together into a fiction before hers were published. It was interesting to run across familiar episodes, but it was also instructive at how much better Laura's voice and characterizations were.

A good book for those who loved the Little House series by Rose's mom Laura Ingalls Wilder. I'm a bit annoyed by the reviewers who didn't take the time to figure out that Rose's book pre-dates Laura's and any quick Google search will show that the Little House books only came about at Rose's urging and assistance. It is a quick, sweet story and does not hinge on knowing anything about Little House. The ending is a bit abrupt and the reader hopes there will be more. Good for all ages.

If you are a fan of Laura Ingalls Wilder. I would recommend that you read this book. Rose was definitely influenced by her family’s history for this story. A nice easy read.

This novella is written by Laura Ingalls Wilder’s daughter Rose Wilder Lane. I’ve been interested in Laura Ingalls lately and I’m being a bit of a completionist.
I’m not quite sure what to say about this book. It’s no secret that Rose Wilder heavily edited Laura Ingalls’ Little House’ books, but this is a case of her cribbing her Mother’s material. The grasshopper plague from Plum Creek as well as elements of The Long Winter are present.
It has the similarities of plot but none of the soul. The characters are thin tropes. The prose reads quickly, competently, and is a bit pulpy.

I read the version of this story where the main characters are Charles and Caroline.
I really enjoyed the story and how their life together began.

I had an idea of what this was, and it was mostly correct. These characters and the family is different from the characters in Laura Ingalls Wilder's Little House on the Prairie series, but a lot of the depictions and happenings are similar and seem to be pulled from Rose's mother's memories.
This couple sets out west, and settles into a dugout on the Plum Creek, sounding just like the one where Laura lived, only they just have the baby boy. They also mention the Swedish neighbors, and the grasshoppers. I feel like this book is pretty simplistic in it's depictions, especially the first half stating what is happening versus showing us the experiences of the characters. But it's done in such a way that romanticizes the westward movement of the time. The 2nd half really digs into the couple's story and what they feel, and what happens while they are experiencing hardship.
This book really makes me wonder why Rose wrote this story though. There is some ponderings about who wrote this particular pioneer story first, Laura or Rose, and if Laura took Rose's idea of the story and made it her own. I still enjoyed this single short novel though, I felt it was beautifully described.

I understand why this is an all but all forgotten book. Compared to her mother, Rose tells instead of shows and it moves fast. I didn't care for the characters.
