Reindeer were quiet. They didn't scream if someone cut them with a knife; they didn't scream when the wolverine bit into their necks and paralyzed their bodies. They didn't have screaming in them.

This booked filled the [b:Beartown|33413128|Beartown (Beartown, #1)|Fredrik Backman|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1482108618l/33413128._SY75_.jpg|54171514] shaped hole in my heart. I've long loved learning about Sami culture, and this book was an explosion of knowledge. Part crime drama, part coming-of-age, Laestadius paints a moving, devastating portrait of a community and family in crisis. There were parts of this book that felt a little forced to me, and it took me a little while to get into, but it overall manages to educate and entertain in equal measure. Her characters, just like Backman's, are viscerally, painfully real, and their circumstances at once mundane and spectacular.

Made me cry. About love, honesty, and frustration. I feel like I could recommend this book to everyone I know and they’d find something in it to relate to or to feel very deeply.

It's not that it was not good or entertaining. My audiobook was due back to the library and I just simply was not interested enough in the story to check it back out at that point.
