Gwen is working as a PI when she takes on a cold case of a missing man. From there the threats start piling up against her family and as usual, things get dark and intense.

I enjoyed this instalment in the series. This one was spooky and culty. I enjoy the PI bend, it lets Gwen still uncover mysteries, but it's more believable than more threats coming directly to her and her family. Everything wrapped up so nicely in this story and all the pieces just fit together so well! Even though it was a bit too perfect I loved it.

I love reading from these characters (minus Sam, he's a bore) and I am sad the series is coming to an end soon!

✨✨✨✨ 1/2

In the fourth book in the Stillhouse Lake series Gwen is working as a PI. She is investigating a cold case of a young college student’s disappearance three years ago,who seems to be the victim of a religious cult.As Gwen starts unravelling the truth she ends up putting her family and her life in danger as the threat is much closer than she'd anticipated.

Bitter Falls is an action packed fourth book in the Stillhouse Lake series by Rachel Caine. Told from different family member’s POV’s it's a fast paced thriller full of suspense and tension. Cannot wait to see where the Proctors land up next!

I would like to thank Thomas Mercer & NetGalley for providing an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest and fair review.

Great read! The only thing that slightly irritated me was Gwen's kids. They were usually so prepared and clever, careful and experienced in dangerous situations. However, I found their attitude in this book - particularly Lenny's - to be quite annoying at times. She seems to become less mature and more rebellious as she ages, in my opinion. Being rebellious like a teenager with the "usual" lifestyle doesn't match with what she has been through and trained for, and the kids' position is undoubtedly not "usual". But since this is merely a personal matter, the book is great, and I will most certainly keep reading this series. There is just one book left.

3 stars because I was starting to roll my eyes at the situations they find themselves in. War with the Hillbilly Mafia, wayward rescue teens, and now another kidnapping and war with a cult. I was wrapped up in the last third and the rescue scenes but I think I might be done with this series if more books come out. This feels like a good ending point.

OMG! How much can one family take? In Bitter Falls, unfinished business from Wolfhunter Lake is resolved but oh man what these people, this family have to go through is beyond what most could or should.

Backing up to the beginning... in this outing, the 4th in the Stillhouse Lake series, Gwen Procter (formerly Gina Royal, ex-wife of serial killer, Melvin Royal - the prior books go into details on all that) and her family, partner Sam Cade, sixteen year old daughter Atlanta (Lanny for short) and thirteen year old son Connor, have begun to settle into family life.

Well, sort of.

The town of Norton doesn’t want them there. Things happen in rapid succession, Gwen’s case, Connor’s trouble at school, Sam’s inability to get and keep work due to their notoriety, threats from the local bad guys, and trouble from their past. Whew! Just saying it makes me weary and that’s just the beginning, as the saying goes.

In discussing Gwen in the first three, I would refer to her as fierce mama bear going after anyone who she feels threatens her family. In this one, she is no different in her fierceness, just in how she goes about things.

I’m glad that the author continues to flush the ancillary characters. I also like how she shows how and why the core characters have changed. Especially how the family has become a family and are working to heal from all the past trauma.

While this one reads fine as a stand-alone, if you have not done so, I encourage you to read the first three.

Excellent as always but wish the action wasn’t all saved for the end.

I am in love with this series. Book 1 is my favorite. It hit all of the right spots for me. Family, warrior mom and woman, danger, INTENSE suspense. Book 2 is my least favorite. The last quarter of that book would have been deliciously dark perfection for me, if it hadn't been for the attitudes of most of the characters throughout the second half. It seriously ruined it for me, and I considered not reading the third. I'm glad I did, because it got the series back on track for me. This one though...again perfection. The last quarter of this book had me in tears. There's one moment in the RV where I unexpectedly starting crying, and then the tears didn't stop much after that. I look forward to the last book in the series!
