Overall, I enjoyed this and learned some things about caring for chickens and the chicken industry at large! I do take slight issue with the take in this book being "chickens are friends/pets, not food" (which reads very "vegetarianism/veganism is the answer to all of our problems"), but I have been an advocate for 10+ years for local food systems that incorporate humanely and pastured raised meats, and I'm not really going to change my mind about that! This book definitely provides some solid reasons why, if you do choose to eat meat (and eggs!), you should purchase them from someone locally, which I appreciated (particularly eggs: if you know anyone with backyard chickens, they would love nothing more than for you to want some of their eggs)

I do think for anyone who already has backyard chickens, who wants to have them (hopefully this book gives me the push I need to advance my goal of chicken caregiving!), or just wants to know more about these curious creatures this is worth a read!

Great listen to, especially if you want chickens or on the fence about chickens or even if you have chickens already. This is great insight into the chicken world and a great historical account of how chickens came to be in our world. I learned so much. Now, I'm searching for my own Thelma & Louise chickens.

I love hens and I loved how Danovich wrote about her hens and other hen-related topics.
