What a spectacular read. Augusten Burroughs work of essays to craft ‘Magical Thinking’ brought this book to life, creating a vivid look into his mind’s journey. This is my first of read of Burroughs work and I definitely will be reading more of his works in the future.

I enjoyed this book more than Running With Scissors due to the various subjects of the essays. Many focused on Burroughs dating life, which, at times, sounded hilariously (scarily?) similar to my own. Overall, the book seemed much lighter and funnier than his memoir, which made it easier to read.

This one was my least favorite of the Augusten Burroughs books I have read. It didn't hold my interest in the same way that "Running With Scissors" and "A Wolf At The Table" did.

Although there are some parts of this book that are outdated (there’s a bit of transphobia and tokenization of trans people in his chapter about Christine Jorgensen), the stories themselves are absolutely hilarious. I have read this book three times and I still laugh just as hard. My favorite chapters are “Commercial Break”, “I Dated an Undertaker” and “Debbie’s Requirements”.

A couple of the essays were laugh out loud funny, but 3 out of 27 isn't a high batting average. By the end, I thought him tedious. BUT worth the read to find the very very funny ones.

Funny laugh out loud writing. I’m still trying to grow the same passion for true, short stories that I have for a good work of fiction.
