«смутная улыбка» запомнится мне тем, как я, сидя в ресторане, дочитывала ее в последние минуты 2024 года. у Саган я еще читала «здравствуй, грусть» и хоть я оттуда почти ничего не помню, мне уже кажется, все ее произведения похожи друг на друга.

от книг Саган веет меланхолией, ее персонажи ведут богемный образ жизни, все это меня, честно говоря, не сильно привлекает.

у писательницы изящный и проницательный стиль–она умеет тонко чувствовать и описывать сложные эмоции. но мне сложно симпатизировать героиням Саган. правда, в «смутной улыбке» были моменты, когда я понимала чувства главной героини.

молодая девушка Доминика знакомится с дядей своего парня, Люком, и влюбляется в него. ее переполняют противоречивые эмоции: с одной стороны она не хочет причинять боль чудесной жене Люка–Франсуазе (весьма интересный выбор имен), с другой–не знает как заглушить непреодолимое влечение к нему.

я даже не знаю, кто меня раздражал больше–Люк или Доминика. наверное все же Люк. он так удобно пристроился в этой жизни: жену оставлять не хочет, потому что она удобная, а к ее страданиям он уже привык✨ и Доминику он сразу предупредил о том, что их интрижка несерьезная и он никогда ее не полюбит. ну просто мужчина мечты

Having only read Bonjour Tristesse before this, I'd be very interested to read some of Sagan's later novels and see how her writing evolved. I especially would like to read something a bit longer and perhaps deeper. A Certain Smile is actually a very similar tale to her previous in many ways so if you enjoy one you will almost definitely like the other. As with Bonjour Tristesse, I found this incredibly relatable and really enjoyable to read. Our protagonist and narrator Dominique talks a lot with Luc about connecting easily with another person with such a similar mind, and my experience reading this echoes that, even across the decades, gender and age differences.
Another thing to note is how good the modern translation is, I haven't compared it to any previous ones but the introduction in my edition gave some examples as to why the update was felt to be required. The modern translation certainly has done the job in making it feel very current and, I understand, more faithful to the original French.

"I protested. I had never thought that this affair could have another dimension, a dimension that was unknown to me, something ordinary and sad. . . I had nothing to sacrifice, not even hope. I had only to end, or allow time to put an end to, an illness. Such bitter resignation implied a certain amount of optimism."

Sorry! I love a juvenile book about sexy unrequited love and resignation! I have a dead girl inside of me!

Entre tanta ciencia ficción, grimdark y fantasía, a menudo me apetece meter cositas como esta pequeña novela escrita en 1956. Y es refrescante también, aunque suene contradictorio, leer algo escrito hace 67 años, con un lenguaje diferente y, sobre todo, con unos personajes que se comportan y hablan de manera diferente a cómo hacemos ahora.

Un cert somriure, de Françoise Sagan, nos habla de un momento concreto en la vida de la joven Dominique, estudiante universitaria en París, que inicia una aventura, un affaire, con Luc, un hombre mayor que ella, casado y que, para más datos, es el tío de su novio.
