I’m loving how much more often I’m seeing books/novels/retellings of different characters in Greek mythology that you typically don’t hear much about. However, this book made me SO angry, and I know that was the point. It’s disheartening to read and compare Phaedra’s story to modern women that don’t get the justice they deserve. To read and compare the men that are conniving, malicious, violent, and selfish to their very core to those we know today makes me want to throw this book across the room and scream. Women deserve better.

But for this sake I’ll round up. There were so quality’s about the book I couldn’t get past it might be because this book referenced so many characters also talked about in Circe. It seemed as though at some point the writer didn’t do research or would miss type. For instance through the book Phaedra says Zeus is her grandfather but then toward the end of the book she changes it to great-grandfather ( her father is the son of Zeus)

I listened to the audio book narrated by Jade Wheeler, Mary Helen Gallucci, Julia Atwood, Mark Owen, Erin DeWard, Leon Nixon, and Nicky Endres and they did an excellent job.

The story was just ok, though. I believe Ms. Shepperson was attempting to use the myth to explore the subject of rape and the patriarchy but I just didn't find it very compelling. Phaedra and the rest of the characters fell pretty flat and I didn't find myself ever caring what happened to any of them. I'm struggling to remember much about the thing and I usually love this genre. It was just meh and not really worth going through the trauma of hearing about multiple rapes for 10 hours.

A quick and compelling enough read. I probably should have brushed up on the traditional Phaedra story first.
