I love this series. I haven't felt like reading this year. I will always read books from this series. Maybe I should stick to books like this. Well written, draws you in, not stale. Which is really saying something at book #54! I even managed to laugh out loud at a line, when they discovered who exactly the suspect was. I'm always reluctant to give books 5 stars but this series is one of the few closest for me. I can't say that I figured out the suspect early, mostly because I was reading when I was exhausted. And I had to put it down to sleep. I also don't know if it was my tired brain or not, but it didn't seem like there were that many "futuristic" details. Or maybe 54 books in, I'm used to it?
Would I read again? Yes.

Interesting case and one of the few instances where I enjoyed the “before” and “now” dual timeline plot device.
The book felt a little light on meaningful Roarke interactions, so a slightly lower rating because I missed him!

JD Robb can write some seriously creepy motherfu*kers! I have to admit that the back and forth between now and when this kid’s life hit the skids is interesting and not really something I remember this author doing.
”She tagged Morris next.
He didn’t bother to block video, so in the dim light she saw him sit up in bed. The sheet, snowy white, covered—barely—anatomical parts she had no business seeing.
His sleepy eyes blinked once before he shook back his long, loose hair. “Who started off the day dead?”
“Not sure yet, on my way to find out. But the DB’s female, and the area indicates she’s going to connect to Elder. It’s him, Morris. I need you to take her.”
“I’ll be waiting for her. Give me the address, and I’ll arrange for her transportation when you’ve finished your on-scene.”
“Appreciate it. Sorry to call you in so early.”
“Dead cops, dead docs. Time means nothing to us.”
Since he started to toss the sheet back, she signed off quickly. “Dallas out.”
She programmed coffee for both of them as Roarke sped through the city.
“I saw Jake Kincade’s bare ass.”
“I’m sorry, what?”
“Not on purpose. When Nadine was on tour, I tagged her—and it was that earth-rotation deal wherever she was, so she’s in bed. With him. It was when I wanted her to dig on that asshole from Oklahoma—Quirk’s battering bastard of an ex. So she doesn’t block video, and Jake just gets out of bed, and there’s his bare ass as he walks off-screen.”
“All right.”
“It’s a damn good ass, okay, but … And here’s Morris. Doesn’t block video and he’s clearly naked in bed. And his works are under the sheet he’s about to toss off. It’s not like he’s a flasher perv, he—like Jake—just doesn’t think a thing of the naked parts.”
Roarke reached over to give her hand a squeeze. “I love the things you find to be a prude over.”
“I’m not pruding. I mean, Morris has a tat of the Grim Reaper guy on his upper thigh. Should I have that information? Never mind.”
OMG, Dallas cracks me up!
I do hate it when I guess the murderer long before they’re revealed. I guess it’s not so much poor writing as it is more I’ve read all of these books and, well, I think the subconscious can pick up on things. Either that or I am a genius. NOT.

I was disappointed in this one. It followed the “formula” perhaps too predictably and left a few threads not followed.

Whew. I think for the first time ever I knew who the unsub was from their first moment on page. This book was twisty. And was told differently than other stories.

I mean it’s an In Death book.
I love these characters so much there isn’t much that would make me dislike one of these books. But I actually really enjoyed the mystery. I liked the way Nora went back to the killer and their mother’s past. I enjoyed those insights.
I did guess the killer but this is book 50 something so not shocking. And that doesn’t bother me. I read these books for these amazing characters and some solid mysteries. They don’t need to be completely out of left field for me to enjoy them.
Now I shall wait until September for the next one. Sigh.
