The protagonist, as with the author’s other book Eileen, is resentful and bitter, but her unlikableness is balanced by her sharp wit and humor. Her dark and idiosyncratic view of life, along with the periods of piecing together things she has done but can’t remember, is reminiscent of Fight Club. The tone, nihilism with an edge of hope, is similar too. Overall this book is interesting, unique and worthwhile if you can go along for the ride.

Sharp, witty, modern feminist book I needed to read and have a good laugh with.

Seriously unhinged.

Now I’m really questioning why at least a few bookstagrams have recommended to read this book “when you are feeling lost in your 20’s”. Nothing in this book should be encouraged.

And I still have no idea why Reva was clinging on to her so hard one minute and then suddenly just didn’t want to be her friend anymore. Were the narrator’s luxurious clothes a symbol of what Reva wanted to be? The moment the narrator have gotten rid of them, Reva was gone.
Utterly bizarre.

Also, reading about that incompetent psychiatrist was incredibly frustrating.

Well, gonna try to be positive and just claim that the moral of the story is that “sometimes taking a break from things can help you appreciate them more / stop taking them for granted”.

This was hard to get through…The main character is pretty miserable. The last 1% of the book had the smallest redemption/semblance of humanity. And holy depression (pills) and drug use, Batman! This book had more normal, everyday villains than any other book that comes to mind. An interesting look into the mind of a brain I’m very glad not to inhabit.

I’m not sure how I feel about the book. It was well narrated and written but the main character is infuriating till the last page and her point of view very narrow and shallow.
It is difficult to read a book where there are very few characters with redeeming qualities.
