Undoing Depression: What Therapy Doesn't Teach You and Medication Can't Give You by Richard O'Connor
5.0
Richard O'Connor gives practical advice on how to undo the self-defeating thought processes depression established in us. He promotes healthy self-awareness and persistence in practicing healthy coping mechanisms for life's ups and downs. He also respects the connection between medical, psychoanalytical, and self-treatment of depression. I appreciate his balanced, down-to-earth view.
Daughter Of Destiny: An Autobiography by Benazir Bhutto
5.0
Benazir Bhutto's autobiography has me riled up and awe-struck at what she endured as a political prisoner. I am disgusted at the part my own country's government played in financing the military coup. President Reagan gave aide to the leader of the coup! He gave planes to him! President Carter did not request Prime Minister Bhutto's death sentence be lifted! What on earth were these men thinking?!? Zia had overthrown a democracy, and the United States government was doing business with him, in spite of the reports from Amnesty International of the horrific conditions and tortures political prisoners were enduring in Pakistan! There is no justification that can satisfy me. All I can do is shake my head in shame. I suppose no government is clean, but this really beats all. If I knew all that my country's government has done over the years, my hair would probably stand on end, and I mean that in the most literal way possible.
The world lost a first-class leader when she was assasinated. Perhaps some day the United States will be as enlightned as Pakistan was when then elected her to office.

Dance of Death by Douglas Preston, Lincoln Child

It has been a long time since I stayed up past midnight to finish a book in one sitting. This book did it for me. I can hardly wait to read the next book in the series!
The Wheel of Darkness by Douglas Preston, Lincoln Child
4.0
I was a bit disappointed to see the book's turn to the supernatural, rather than remaining solidly in the physical. Nevertheless, I thoroughly enjoyed this book's pace, twists, and turns. The ending did not surprise me, either, another slight disappointment, as I prefer endings I did not see coming. I look forward to reading the next book in the series.
Family by J. California Cooper

This book made me angry for all that people have suffered under the hands of folks with more power. But it was well written, with some wonderfully fulfilling plot twists! I finished it in a day.
The Problem with Women... is Men: The Evolution of a Man's Man to a Man of Higher Consciousness by Charles J. Orlando
5.0
The book starts out humorous and then settles into a practical guide for men who want to evolve into the type of man a woman of class would want in her life. I even learned more than a few things from that section of the book! There is also guidance for women who want to take back their 50% of control in the relationship, rather than continuing to allow the man to control the relationship according to his own whims.
Most important, the book validates women rather than telling them to change themselves to just accept the way men are socialized into bad relationship behavior. Mr. Orlando admonishes men to step up their game, to evolve, rather than demanding that women tolerate their less-than-enlightened behavior. There should be more books like this one in the relationship self-help section of bookstores.
