This is the best book I've read in a couple of years: It brought to tears several times, it made me laugh, it made think and reflect about life, it taught me about life in Egypt and about Islam, it taught me about me.

This book really hit me hard, because it deals with what is my biggest fear: loosing my cognitive abilities.

I just kept thinking, at the begining, "please not let him loose it, please don't let him loose it" and them I just kept thinking "I would just kill myself, I just want to kill myself". But in reality, as it usually is, things are more complicated.

At the end, I just wish I could go and leave some flowers at Algernon's grave.

Amazing book, dense with information and filled with all the gory details. I found it to be a pretty balance account of a part of american history that has been both romanticed and demonized, but Mr. Gwynne managed to present facts with a very captivating narrative.
