I need to admit defeat on this one because I'm just NOT excited or motivated to continue. I tried!!

I like the books idea and set up but I'm 47% in and I don't know where the book is headed. I don't feel connected or drawn to either of the character, and I'm not invested in either of them or their romance.

This book was so good!!

It was genuinely funny. I loved the set up - she's dating to find a boyfriend, he's a new friend who she meets after getting stood up at the bar where he works. He tells her to book her first dates there and he'll keep an eye out for her. SWOON!

Their chemistry is crazy because they're genuinely "just friends", at least for a while. LOVED.

I REALLY enjoyed this book and I'm glad to have found a new college sports series to obsess over!

Naomi and Finn are both great characters, together and separately. I felt like the author gave them a lot of personality, history... there were so many little details about each of them that never felt like "too much" or overwhelming. The way she weaved in their quirks/likes/dislikes as parts of their history/story was great. (Ex: Naomi not enjoying English, breaking out in hives when anxious, issues with her mom.)

Finn is HOT. I'm picturing a big ol beefcake. Just a sidenote here.

I love stories where the characters have been communicating on the side. In this case, they were online friends - she's a streamer, he's a mod for her Discord/streams. Then they wind up being roommates!

To me the extra drama at the end -
the fact that Finn got in another fight (and Naomi got understandably upset with him for it), then "remembered" the previously unacknowledged drama from prior to his accident... and then it was left at that THE END ?? It was pretty unsatisfying. I was like, is Finn going to get all his memories back or just this one random piece? Is he going to go back to being the Finn from before, a short temper and hotheaded? Will he be good with Naomi still ?

I liked the concept of this book, and the world building - both the way the information was presented and the idea of this after-death world being a monotonous office job.

I think the last 30% of the book... the surprise twists and extra drama... were just kind of much. A lot of things to cram in when I think it could've been a good end with the trial.

This book made me so unreasonably angry and put me in a book slump.

Minor spoilers below.

  • Hero likes heroine. Hero is casting movie, and casts heroine in minor part; he asks a friend to be the director.
  • Director is interested in lead actress (not heroine). Asks hero for a private room at his family's club. Hero says yes.
  • That night director shows up, but with heroine - not lead actress. Hero is concerned. Heroine looks out of it... drugged... etc. He prevents director from leaving with her.
  • He says that everyone has heard the rumors of the director taking advantage of women... he just always looked away because they were friends.

When women say they are afraid of all men, this is why. Because even if a man doesn't commit assault, he will look the other way for his friends. ABSOLUTELY DISGUSTING.

I have pretty mixed feelings on this book. The writing was good. The set up was good. I liked the way it explored complicated dynamics with abusive parents and eating... the way it talked about grief and anger with a spouse who has died...

But I was left feeling very mixed about the book. I didn't understand the "third act conflict."
Why would she keep a binder of letters she wrote? I bought the fake letters in Tessa Dare's When a Scot Ties the Knot but this one was beyond ridiculous. And why would he be so angry when she didn't lie?? She literally wrote fake letters to an imaginary Mike, not HIM. She didn't imagine her Mike was a celebrity or professional hockey player. I don't know. It just felt SO WEIRD.

The writing feels a little... disjointed to me. It's really quick chapters, back and forth, kind of stilted. I'm like 40% in and not feeling anything for either character or the relationship.
