Look, I get what they were trying to do but the writing was terrible

It was quite a fun story, I enjoyed aspects of it. 
My main problem was the rampant racism and misogyny. There's one female character and she is a classic Not-like-other-girls character, honestly she could be used as teaching material on how not to write women. The racism was mostly toward Arab and Romany people and came in the form of negative stereotypes and comparing them to rodents and insects.
I struggle to put that kind of thing aside but even if I was able to the story was still pretty confusing and left a lot of weird magical plot points completely unexplained. Also I felt the characters were not very well developed including Doyle the main character.
Still though, the pacing was good, the action scenes were fun and easy to follow. There were things to like about this book but overall it was a no for me.

It had a nice message but the story didn't seem very well thought out

It was great, but I think the novel will be even better. 
If I hadn't known this was a novel first I probably would have rated it higher... but I couldn't help thinking the scenes would have been better with more detail
