boring, unoriginal writing couldn't keep me invested for more than two pages.
i know it's normal for characters to be unlikeable, but the first character explaining their "background" or whatever just comes off as annoying & boring. it did not hold my attention & i skipped over it, so i just decided to drop it since there's no point in continuing a book that made me skip a chunk of it's beginning.
i simply didn't finish because i was beginning to get bored & thus was not retaining any information as i read on. but this is a book i want to revisit someday because i am still very interested in how people of the past told stories & want to continue to examine how common the themes & motifs are in these stories, & i just generally find fairytales to be interesting (the original fairytales, not whatever the fuck disney is up today) it's just not the right time right now.
Flaws of characters a main focus? It's complicated
2.5
i am mostly fond of "the awakening" in this collection of short stories, it's the only reason i gave the entire book a rating higher than 1 star. there are plenty of interesting stories in here as well, but kate chopin's racism is very prominent throughout the book that it makes it difficult to focus on anything else most of the time (as expected from an author of this time period).
in my opinion, the only stories worth reading are the awakening, the story of an hour, & a pair of silk stockings.
