I love love love Machado’s writing style, it’s beautiful and poetic and I just want to read so much more. Some of the stories fell short for me but all of them were good, some resonated more than others and some I found myself skimming through a little. My only issue is that a lot of things were repeated, certain words or phrases or scenarios and that’s just a pet peeve of mine specifically LOL nothing against the author. Inventory was my favorite story.

The only thing that saved this from getting 1 star was Clara and her friends. Morgan, Chris, and Jenny were all insufferable. Jonah was so close to being good but had no personality. Felt like a Wattpad fanfiction.

I hated this book when I first started reading it. The main character is insufferable, there was too much sexual content for my liking, the dialogue is terrible, and I figured out both twists incredibly early on. It ended up growing on me though; it might not have been executed in the best way but the story was good, the characters were mostly likable, and there were some genuinely creepy moments that played out really well. Supposedly this is classified as “extreme horror” and I’m not a fan of that genre as a whole, but while it was a bit intense at times it never felt over the top or unnecessarily violent/gory. I think this author has a lot of potential and I’ll definitely give him another shot!

Mostly untagged spoilers ahead, sorry!! Please read at your own discretion.

I’m giving this 2 stars instead of 1 because I like the writing style, it’s very smooth and easy to read while still being flowy and interesting. This author has been recommended to me  SO many times and I will probably give her another chance because I do enjoy the way she writes, this book just wasn’t it for me.

I was invested in the beginning. The characters are good, mostly; they’re pretty one-note and there’s a bit of a heavy romance subplot but they were still likable, even the side characters who serve no purpose
(RIP Don and Jenny
. It lost me about 60% through when it became obvious that the plot was basically any isolation horror movie that’s ever existed, and then it felt like a waste of time so I just skimmed through the rest of it. Honestly it reminded me a lot of the video game “Until Dawn” which I also didn’t like, but I did like these characters more.

There is a dog,
she does die.

I LOVE monster stories and creature features but this just did not do it for me. The creatures reminded me too much of the Spooky Island monsters from the Scooby Doo movie, I couldn’t take them seriously.

Honestly, just read the summary and move on LOL that’s it, that’s the whole book. If you’ve never watched a movie in your life you’ll probably enjoy it though!!

Someday I’ll get through this. This is my second attempt. I think I just need to be in the right mindset for it.
