the audiobook cast is amazing!! this will sound stupid LOL but there was too much war stuff - machines and guns and planes and stuff that got kind of textbooky and i zoned out sometimes, but if you’re into that kind of thing you’ll probably love this!

this would’ve been an amazing story of grief and loss but the cosmic horror elements eventually lost me, and this is coming from someone who loves cosmic horror. maybe i just wasn’t in the headspace to read it, so i’ll definitely give it a re-read at some point!

i love this book so much i wish i could eat it. absolutely one of the best most original books i’ve ever read - and they say you can’t write vampires in ways that haven’t been done before! i picked this up on a whim and i’m so so glad i did, it was everything i could have hoped for and more. i like a lot of books but i don’t love a lot of books and i do think of myself as kind of a harsh rater but i don’t have a single bad thing to say about this one except that it ended at all.

glad i’m a fast reader so i didn’t waste too much time on this one. only some of the characters have any redeeming factors and even then it’s just barely - they don’t get a resolution anyway so it doesn’t even matter. the “twist” was boring and predictable, the climax was over way too quickly, the main character was annoying, the ending was bad, and i wasn’t a fan of the writing style. it was super repetitive and characters often contradicted themselves. some characters just… existed?? and didn’t serve a purpose but to be, idk red herrings maybe?? the more i think about this one the more reasons i find to dislike it.

bizarre. it felt like a fever dream and i’ll probably think about it often! it was genuinely an enjoyable read but the perspectives of certain characters were sometimes kind of a slough to get through. the overarching theme of family, found or otherwise, was nice, and it was unexpectedly queer which was also nice!

Absolutely not scary in the traditional sense but it was genuinely such a good read. I did expect more ~horror~ but it wasn’t at all disappointing. The characters were delightful honestly and the dialogue was great. Amazingly solid story all around. They don’t write ‘em like this anymore. 😩
