Pond Water by Rian Mileti, Brenda FireEagle Biddix
4.0
It was pretty good for being a short story. Lots going on in 80 pages but it was a pretty good read if you want something quick.
I hated Jared. He seemed like that typical nosy Vet neighbor that doesn't have anything else to do besides watch everyone else and let his mind wander. I couldn't help but think if he had left it alone, things would have been fine but that doesn't make a good story. He should have just let crazy be crazy and kept his nose to himself.
All in all, pretty good book. The money goes to the author for her medical needs so there's no guilt in buying the book if you don't like it.

If Life Is a Bowl of Cherries What Am I Doing in the Pits? by Erma Bombeck

Iread this when I was younger, before I was even out of high school, and some of it still pertains to today's life and situations but you can tell this book was written in a different time. There are some chapters that could be removed without compromising the book but, all in all, not a bad read.
Girls Made of Snow and Glass by Melissa Bashardoust

It was an interesting story from both Linette and Minna's POVs and how similar their lives are. It's sad to see how these girls/women navigate through lives that aren't really of their own choosing. This book was touching and heart wrenching but really good. I really liked it more than I expected to.
Wabi: A Hero's Tale by Joseph Bruchac

There was a lot more action than I expected. I thought this would be a cute little romance but no. Between Wabi's sarcasm and the action, I'd read this book again. My favorite character, despite him only having a brief appearance, is the skunk. So sassy.
I will say that some of the words feel like they're made up to seem like native American words. I looked them up when I came across them, because I get curious, and couldn't find them anywhere. The only one I could find was the Toad Woman and that was a book. I also looked up the author and found he's got some Abenaki blood which is where the story ideas come from. So, I'm assuming the words are based on the dialect of the Abenaki tribe, specifically.

Orc Stain, Volume 1 by James Stokoe

It was like a really weird fever dream but I'm invested. One eye is awesome and probably one of my all time favorite characters I've come across. The art and the world composition reminds me of a mix between a Studio Ghibli film and a more adult Dr Seuss. I liked it a lot more than I thought I would.

I wish there were more. I feel kinda bad for One-eye. Beard was right there and Zazu pulled him back. He surprised the weird cousin It and could have finished him off but I get wanting to leave it for more story later. I hope James comes out with more issues later.
Hard in Hightown by Varric Tethras

This was a lot better than I expected. It was very reminiscent of older mystery books where it was kinda predictable with just the right amount of twists and turns that kept you guessing. I honestly figured out who it was within the first few pages but it made me second guess quite a bit to the point I rethought my guesses until they proved to be right all along. I love books like this and the MC is actually COMPETENT in what he doing.
I would love it if there was a Swords and Shields. Mary did a fantastic job of making me feel like I was reading a book really written by Varric. She captured his way of story telling perfectly with beautiful descriptions.

I don't mind a strong female protagonist and can appreciate a character with a temper, but one thing I can't stand is a character that is literally unhinged to the point that they can't keep themselves under control. Idk how long she had been an FBI agent, but long enough to work undercover ops, so assume at least a year. She lacked common sense, even when one of the other guys was giving her warning hints. Girl needs to learn to shut the fuck up during an undercover op, no matter how angry she is, or take some anger management classes. Something.
Also, the criminal wouldn't just confess like that. Especially not to someone who's trying to beat them up/kill them. C'mon. There's no realism in this and sure, it's a book, I don't expect a lot of realism, but I do expect SOME to keep me engaged.
Disappointing considering I was excited to read this.

DNFed at 6%. I always give books 3-5 chapters to become engaging, I barely got halfway through chapter 3. I stopped when she described the color of the tulips and how many she put in each room... then went on to describe the place settings for the dinner that night... I don't care. I didn't understand how this pertained to the plot.
While I enjoy some detail in the books I read, there is such a thing as too much detail. I understand it's supposed to be a psychological thriller, but it's hard to be "thrilled" when you can't stay awake. Disappointing since I was really looking forward to this book. The title and the blurb/summary intrigued me.
