sad
i’m glad she’s finally able to live her life. her story is so sad but it’s hers and she should be able to share it!!

overall entertaining - i enjoyed reading about these cities from 50 years in the future lol
Morris was a little too capitalistic for my liking though - i didn’t notice this much in Hav! the Chinese essay really hammered this home for me

very bleak and manly, but i’m glad it’s bleak because this shit was heavy. i’m glad it didn’t glorify the whole process too much, brought everyone back down to earth.
white people really came in and tried their hardest to completely destroy this land
a stark coming of age

okay, at first i was going to give this 3.5 stars, but after reflecting on the book more, it really does deserve 4 stars. just because i thought the ending was a little meh, isn’t that also a reflection of life itself? something that i might understand more as i age???
first, love a caribbean novel. such a beautiful picture of a life, despite, or perhaps because of, the suffering included in it - life and it’s ups and downs baby amirite!!! the horse of sorrow line that was threaded throughout wow ok!! such lovely metaphors
the goods of the earth remain the earth’s, and man does not own even the skin he’s wrapped in. all he owns are the feelings of his heart.
im glad she didn’t forgive or even pretend to accept elie at the end…

low-stakes enjoyment. little pockets of goodness. you can still be lonely in a small town, that’s for sure. very human, which is lovely. everyone striving to live their lives - aren’t we all trying to do the same!!
the women characters could’ve been better
One shudders at the thought of the meaninglessness of life while at the same instant, if the people of the town are his people, one loves life so intensely that tears come into the eyes.

i’m glad multiple cities were covered - the New Orleans section blew my mind tbh. i wish Chicago was included! important to reflect on how i’m contributing to gentrification and what i can do each day to combat it. very informative, def recommend to any american
