The Stone Sky by N.K. Jemisin
4.5
this book was absolutely phenomenal!!!! it’s such a magical work. i love how revolution looks different for each character and i loved reading about the history, even when it was so heartbreaking. it’s an excellent conclusion to the series and while this trilogy wasn’t my favorite, i did love a lot of it. when hoa talked about how people can forget about a person’s reasons for why they did something drastic and how history can reduce it to a mere sentence reminded me of things fall apart by chinua achebe and how the main character is reduced to a single sentence, his whole life, his flaws, his strengths, erased. his humanity, erased. this trilogy is so human and so emotionally vivid and strong. somewhere in the early 300s, hoa writes “if we help syl anagist further down [the path of exploitation], we will have said “what was done to us was right and natural and unavoidable” and GODD if that isn’t powerful. essun’s journey and her ability to hope and to love a possible future was so heartwarming to see, and Jemisin excels at making you feel for her characters and all of their flaws.

For the first bit of this book, it was harder for me to really get involved with it, but as I neared the end, the twists and turns definitely began to enrapture me. I started a notes list on my phone of all the different motivations that people or creatures could have and what some of the mysteries were and how they tie together because damn is this book confusing! It was definitely enjoyable though I didn't love it at first. It's crazy to compare this book to the first where magic isn't even involved in the first and our only understanding of orogeny is with the earth and... stuff (I can't even begin to describe it still). I love seeing that transition and I really have no idea how to describe this book to others. I really loved Nassun's journey and it's so sad. It really alters your perspective on Essun as you don't realize how she treated her daughter because we only see her talk about how she needs to find her in the first book. R.I.P. Alabaster I love that man.
I love seeing how identity plays out in this book and how Hoa describes Essun as being a compilation of all these different people and identities which is a cool visualization of how other people impact us. Identity also plays out a lot when it comes to describing people as monoliths, whether that be the stills, orogenes, or stoneaters. I love the characterization in this book and Jemisin beautifully shows us how these people's experiences shape their viewpoints on others. Really awesome.

second chances, the connections that exist between all of us and their power. the ending wrapped things up soo nicely and i love the message of moving forward, finding what’s next, living on. it was such a beautiful end to the series.

i loved learning about tartah and i love how his strength and ability is emphasized, he just needs some extra accommodations and i feel like this volume really captures how wonderful magic can be. i love how it’s its own existence and is malleable. i want to know the origin of the magic and i want to learn more about it. qifrey is a scary character in his own right, i love seeing so many parts of him and how he is similar to the brimmed caps in that they need coco, but for what!? so interesting, love love this.
Sweet Tooth Vol. 5: Unnatural Habitats by Jeff Lemire
stuff is slowly starting to uncover! i love how the artstyle differs slightly when it tells from different perspectives, even though i don’t really like the styles sometimes.(like in the journal of the taxidermist). the portrayal of the inuit characters felt kind of weird as they didn’t have much a role beyond being the ones around the white guy which is…interesting. as we learn about the origin of the hybrids we also remember that a white man’s audacity knows no bounds.
definitely a tense and stressful volume for the characters so i went through through the latter half super fast.
