An incredible, captivating story. I'm usually intimidated by 900+ page books, but the prose is accessible and very easy to run through. Definitely one of the great historical fiction novels. However, despite the engrossing story, I actually found the ending to be unsatisfying! Several character arcs start out great and then never get resolution or development, or the characters just don't grow from their mistakes (apart from the villains). It's an overall great story but still had wasted character potential. I've heard the videogame adaption solves these problems!

One of the most beautifully illustrated children's books you will ever see. The format of alternating chapters between the fairy tales and the frame narrative is very sweet and clever.

Exceedingly beautiful manga with a fun take on Dracula. I'm a big fan of weird adaptations and the boarding school gender bending story is pretty interesting. The pacing however is all over the place and I feel like if you've never read the original Dracula it's easy to get lost. I'm also wary of the direction the queer/trans representation is going, but we'll have to see how it develops. Still an interesting read

Beautifully illustrated, even though I'm not a huge fan of Manara's singular female character design. A good summation of the first half of the original book, I look forward to the second volume!

I adore this book. It is an excellent blend of historical fiction, dry humor, over the top shenanigans, and queer romance. It's definitely not a serious historical novel, but it does paint a great picture of a diverse medieval world. I, as a queer history-lover, feel like the target audience for this book, but if you don't usually like heavier historical fiction then some of the language and setting might be a little boring. But I thought it was a quick and fun read.

I had very high expectations for this book and mostly enjoyed it. The elements of historical fiction for the Renaissance Spain setting were great. I LOVED the magic system, very beautiful. However I feel the romance could've been developed more earlier on in the book. The pacing was all over the place, sometimes slow and sometimes way too fast to pay attention to any character interactions. Kind of between 3.75-4 for me
