With Wintergirls I felt like I would have to do major damage control in my classroom because of the tough themes it held. In DG&DP, Sonnenblick tackles the tough subject of cancer, but he does it in an uncommon way, he does it with gut-bursting humor. At times, my eyes would begin tearing and I was just about to start sobbing, Jordan Sonnenblick made a joke and I began laughing again. His method of mixing raw emotion with humor is perfect for the middle school classroom.

I don’t want you to think that he took the topic of cancer, let alone, the topic of a child with cancer too lightly. As a reader, I felt everything that Steven’s family was going through, and even though I was laughing at times, there was still an underlying tone of seriousness.

Sonnenblick’s character development was flawless. I was surprised to that I was still able to identify with the main character, an average, and sometimes awkward 8th grade boy. All in all, I loved this novel. Jordan Sonnenblick is an outstanding author, and I would truly enjoy implementing his work into my classroom.
