I will say the first act was way too flowery for me. I understand that the narrator mostly saves that for when she's describing Edith, but it really was too much. It all got more bearable the further I got into the book and the author dropped the purple prose. In such a short time, I was convinced of the relationship which a book 10x the length can't even get right. I don't really agree with what the narrator did, but I suppose that's a part of the narrative.

There is nothing redeeming about this book. The characters were so stereotypical that I could so easily have plucked any other character from similar books and put it into this one and the plot would stay the same. Speaking about the plot, it was so filled with holes that it was practically non-existent. I felt like the book just existed so the main character could get laid. As soon as her best friend was introduced, I knew she was the villain even though the author kept trying so hard to make the ice girl the evil one. The main character's relationships with everyone were so underdeveloped it was like watching a bunch of strangers blabber on forever. The worst offense however was the sheer stupidity of the plot. You are telling me that these immortal beings have spent CENTURIES trying to solve a riddle and NONE of them thought that "where darkness meets lights" was twilight? Why was Grimm the only one to recognize the Cleste/evil lady's aura? Why was everyone convinced that the main character was just so irresistible that the King could not POSSIBLE resist falling in love with her? WHY tf was every line out of everyone's mouth so gd awful? Why was she always clenching her back teeth? Do you only clench your back teeth when you're mad? Why was this immortal king who refused to fall in love with anyone fall in love with the first girl he happened to be alone with? Why did I subject myself to this?

It was going pretty decently but then I remembered that in the reviews written on the book it was inspired by Rebecca and I instantly knew where the entire plot was going. One of my favorite books is Rabecca so of course I'm gonna be pretty critical. If you want to use a classic at least do something more inspired.

It's frightening how relevant it still is to our society though I am not surprised.
