I recently read (and adored!) On These Black Sands by Vanessa Rasanen, and let me tell you now that if you haven't read this yet, please do! I am at loss for words when it comes to how much I loved this book.
It really felt like I was in the world, despite there not being info dumping, and the characters came to feel like friends as time went on. I loved everything about it, from the pirates to the romantic tension to the execution of the one bed trope to the betrayal.
I was hooked onto this book from the start, and it got to the point that I woke up at 6 AM in the morning just to be able to keep reading it, despite my extremely high appreciation of sleep-ins when possible.
And the ending killed me. I had theorised that it might happen, and I thought that if I had guessed it it would hurt less, but I was wrong. I won't put in spoilers, but let's just say that Rasanen broke my heart and then trampled on it just to hurt me more. To say that I want to read From These Dark Depths (the sequel) ASAP is an understatement!
