  • the interactions and tension between V and Z for the first half of the book were, good. the were even better in the middle. then they got together and i got bored. (for a while)
  • it was revealed that they started to like each other right when they met, insta-love is not my thing anymore
  • them being enemies from the start makes sense, them finding each other attractive makes sense, them respecting or liking certain features makes sense, but them liking them from the start? no.

random tidbits that i liked
  • V bonds with two dragons
  • feathertails are actually baby dragons
  • Sgaeyl and Tairn being mated pairs
  • when S and T go off on their own, they can affect X and V’s feelings

    • honestly, anything todo with the bonding between dragons and humans or dragons and other dragons

  • then came the betrayal… this was good. but an okay plot twist. it’s revealed that X is working with the griffin fliers and that they are just trying to survive. so it turns out the dragon fliers are the evil ones for trying to save themselves and hoarding their weapons. i think this is an okay twist. it would’ve also been an okay twist if X was just a bad guy and wanted to take down Navarre. I don’t care as much about what the plot twist is, I care more that the betrayal was very weak. it shocked me, but it was weak. like yea he betrayed you, but immediately was like, “oh but i’m actually the good guy, trying to save the people outside of Navarre”
  • i don’t know, it just didn’t hit as hard when i understood the explanation. it is the end of the book, so either they had to make up or their conflict would make up the next book. and they chose… to do that. honestly though, i do respect and like the decision. i just expected to be wowed more and that might just be too high of expectations.

  • the last plot twist about Brennan. I don’t know why i thought for a second that he’d come back as a venin, but this is good too. though it does raise some questions. but i’m excited for the next book.

  • Violet doesn’t take back Xaden at the end of this book. good. something to look forward to in the next book.

and my feelings on the main characters...
  • Dain…
i’m not sure how i feel about him. i’d say i don’t like how two faced he was, but that’s kinda the point. I guess the only thing i really didn’t like was his holier than thou attitude.
  • Rhiannon..
I do like her character, i appreciate the loyalty and friendship she provides to the rest of the characters. even if it is very one note.
  • Xaden…
the best character by far. complex, secretive, and cunning, he’s the natural male lead. i have no
  • Violet…
her hesitancy to kill is acceptable, but she does realize she’s being trained for war right? also, stop telling me she is smart, i get it. she’s also a good character, but not nearly as interesting or complex as X.

so this was not what i expected. i expected a greek retelling of Hades and Persephone and what we got was:

- Olympus is just a big city, where Zeus controls the upper part, Hades controls the lower part, and Poseidon controls the docks and etc.
- The main 13 "gods" are actually titles given to people, like city council titles. For example, the appointed Demeter controls the food distribution through the city. also the roles of Zeus, Poseidon, and Hades are the only roles that are inherited from parent to child... because *reasons* :)
- everyone is referred to as their titles. Because the titles are both roles in the city, and becomes the default name for the individual. basically, if Persephone had really married Zeus, everyone would start calling her Hera and only Hera, even though she already has a first and last name.
- the "gods" don't really have godly or magical powers, which would be fine, but some have remnants of it, like when Hermes can relay messages perfectly. it's a bit odd.
- Hades is not like any dark romance lead ever. he is not dark at all. The only thing dark about him are the rumors about him. there is once scene where he does something dark, but he immediately regrets it and it is not a pattern of behavior, nor is it hinted at throughout the book. Hades hates death... which sucks.
- Hades gets 3 dogs, and they are named cerberus (that's good), scylla (uhh...), and charybdis (ehh..)
- at least we still get the part of Persephone staying in Hades's domain during winter time lol

basically, this really isn't a greek retelling, it's just a story that is similar to the original, and it also happens to have the same names.

overall, i'd say this book is okay. the smut is just okay. the romance is not good. the plot is also just okay. the way Katee Robert tried to do the retelling is bad.

i think reading all of Taylor Jenkins Reid's books as well as "What Happens After Midnight" has finally reset my romance brain.

I wasn't going to read anymore of Emily Henry's books, but was convinced to give this one a try by a friend.

I debated between 3 or 4 stars, and ended up at 3. simply because this was a good book, but not one i'll ever come back to or think that fondly love like my 4 or 5 stars are.

Did not finish book. Stopped at 6%.
i love stationery. like really really love it. like it's literally my #1 hobby beside reading.

but this book in the first 6% just goes on and on and on and on and on about her pilot g2 pen, and her happy planner, and her moleskine.

uh barf

this was not expected. not on my tbr, but i'm glad to have read it. this book was very cute, but not quite a 5 star. i think i just needed more lily and tag couple moments idk.

there were a lot of schitt's creek references and thank god i  haven't watched that show because if i had, i would've hated this book.

there were also a lot of taylor swift references, and at first they were more subtle, but after a while they started to really be crammed in.

probably should've read this as a physical book instead of the audiobook, but it's all my library had on hand.

i thought this was funny, but probably would've enjoyed it more if i had the physical book.

so this was just okay... i was into it in the moment, but in now it's just meh. the romance was okay, not as good as it could've been.

the storyline with ava's family felt unnatural to me. it felt normal at first, then took an extreme turn.

the storyline with alex's family also felt unnatural. once again the first half of the book was dull and normal, then it took a sharp turn into less of a slice-of-life romance. not that it's a bad thing that it went towards more fiction, it was just not the tone the first half of the book had.

also, i used the audiobook for this and even though it didn't taint the book, man did i have a lot of trouble with that.

a good book, but overall i think i just like TJR's romantic/romance books better. those always pull a lot more emotion out of me.

i'm finally done with reading all of TJR's backlist and i'm so happy :) i started her books with seven husbands, and i definitely did not like it. but i'm glad i continued to read her books because her other books, especially the lesser known ones, have been some of my favorites of all time!

overall, if she continues to write, i shall definitely be reading :)
