A quarter of the way through I decided that I loved this book. Halfway through I decided that I hated it. Three-quarters of the way through I realized the true cleverness of it. All of which is to say, it's really hard to rate! I'm so impressed by the construction, but I'm not sure I actually like the narrative or characters very much.

Honestly, I'm pretty upset about this book. I question the author's journalistic ethics. It felt exploitative, dehumanizing, and self-congratulatory. That said, I'm rating it generously because I knew very little about the DRC before and it at least inspired me to educate myself. I just plan to use more reliable and decolonized sources in future.

Often infuriating, yet compulsively readable.

I had such high expectations, but it was just intensely mediocre. :(

My first from this author and looking forward to reading more! I do wish the two storylines had intersected sooner. I think it would have made for a stronger journey for Raquel.
