wait, the last chapter… why was i gagged??

anyways, this book was mediocre in the truest sense of the word, but it was a nice escape. i had a pretty good time reading it, even though i had to skim the final 15%

Over a year to finish a book is crazyyy.

Some quotes & writing I liked:

“I looked into the camera and deep into my mother’s eyes and she looked back.”

“Her words crossed the jungle, soared above the pineapple and palm trees, traveled over the mountains of the Sierra Madre, past the Popocatepetl volcano, down into the valley of Mexico City, and moved through the treeless streets straight into me.
So what the hell happened to your arm? I heard her ask.”

“I’m that deep line, from pinkie to thumb, in the palm of your right hand, Mike. The lifeline that gets full of dirt when you forget to wash.”

“My mother said, Just pray it’s a boy.”

A tiny bit absurd, but the audiobook was engaging. I wonder if there would’ve been less of a disconnect if the statements were written in past tense though.

(3.5/5) captivating, quick and enjoyable read. i can see what the author was going for but i just wish she pushed the themes a bit further. would’ve definitely been one of my favorites if i read this at 14.
